It's about 5 1/2 miles with the 40% being a steadily increasing uphill, of course culminating in just a heart attack final quarter mile and then a gentle sloping back side all the way back down to my house. I'm still working on not walking at all. I'm down to walking about 20 meters just before the start of the real uphill (Mt Ribidioux) which is about 2 miles into the run. From mile 1.8 to about 2.5, you just feel like you are going to die as it quickly jumps to 5% all the way to 8% grade.

Here it is on mapmyfitness.com
iMapMyRun: Dec 4, 2009 1:07 PM
Find more Runs in Riverside, California

invest early or wait for profit with small clients

I had an interesting conversation with the CEO of a new startup last week. We were discussing how I might be able to help them reach a known set of potential customers (they had a database of contacts with known demographics and buying patterns). As the discussion progressed, the CEO kept mentioning how many great ideas I had on how to improve their strategy, as well as execute on the immediate tactics. I was thinking "wow.. this is great, this deal is a shoe in, we're a perfect match".

We continued to talk for another 10 or 15 minutes and notes were being taken on the ideas we were bouncing around (not all me by far, he was an amazingly experience and knowledgeable technology exec), and then he said that he'd like to keep in touch with me and meet again in about 3 months. I asked him why we'd wait 3 months, when he'd said that the campaigns needed to run and be completed in the next 6 weeks? He said that we sounded to 'big' for the mode they were at and didn't want to make us think that although they might have champagne dreams, the definitely had two buck chuck budget.

We went on to talk a few more minutes about this issue and I assured him I understood their position, and that our/my goals were to work with interesting people, with good ideas. When these opportunities came along, budget was obviously a necesity, as we all need to feed our families, but as a company, we wanted to do engaging work, and work with interesting people as a primary objective. He continued to be concerned about leading us down the wrong road, so we agreed to speak again in a few months, which is when they thought they'd have the traction to engage with us.

I really appreciated to honesty of the conversation, but am defintitely contemplating who was right? I certainly like the idea of working with a young startup from the very beginning and help them grow, but I've certainly seen what he's talking about, where we come to an agreement based on what they can afford and then into the engagement they want more because they can now see more possibilities, and it's just not profitable or wise for us to do more for the same budget. You'd think this would be straight forward and it's a simple math problem of either they can afford the cost of our offering (they can't) so we should move on, as he indicated. But the beauty of being a human is that I get to reason, and make exceptions. when I find that special connection in a potential client, it might be worth doing a bit more and help it blossom into something great that we'd be proud to say a few years down the line, 'we've been with X since the very beginning'.

I dont' have an answer, but am defintiely pondering what I've learned, and would I do something different next time.

9 miles of altitude - good - price the following week - bad

Effort
Originally uploaded by toosuto
I spent the past weekend up in Tehachapi, between Mojave and Bakersfield, with my in laws for the weekend. On Sunday morning, Fathers Day, I went out for my normal run, which I love to do up there. It's a 4.5 mile loop, at about 5000 feet elevation (i think it's actually 4750 or something like that - i need to reinstall motionbased.com drivers so it shows me my elevation more clearly.

For some crazy reason, I had a bug in my bun (oh, I should also mention that as I live in Riverside, I''m accustomed to running at about 350 feet above sea level), and deciced to run a second loop, in celebration to my Fathers Day bbq extravaganza planned for later in the day. Normally, a 9 mile run is my minimum average for my weekly 'long run', but that elevation gain really does take a little more effort. Overall, it seemed like after about 6 miles, I actually seemed to be getting accustomed to it, and really thought that the last 3 miles went extremely well.

The problems started on Monday and really ran all week. I really felt tired, which I'm assuming was an after effect of the altitude. I'm sure overall it'll make me stronger - but looking at my stats for the week - i certainly wasn't breaking any speed records. After that longer run, i really do get why the pros go up to Colorado Springs and Boulder to train. Doing that for even a couple weeks and then doing a race down at sea level must be a huge help.

work blog for andersson-pape studios (ap studios)

I'm doing less work related blogging here lately, and i kind of forgot to mention why! It's a fast, flat 5k running race in Carlsbad, California, that my buddy Kelly O'Shaunessy and I have been running since 1998. I've only beaten him one time in all of those years, but I keep trying. I'll give you all of my excuses and get them out of the way now. He's 5'10 and I'm 6'4", and that means that I out weigh him by nearly 30lbs.

I've always felt that I trained harder than him for the race, but he easily takes me to task each and every year. We actually do 3 or 4 races a year against each other. The Cbad 5k, as we call it is the only pure running race. The others are all Sprint distance Triathlons (1/2 mile swim, 12 - 15 mile bike ride, and 3 mile/5k run) along the Orange County/San Diego Coast. I take an even bigger beating at the Triathlons' than I do at Carlsbad.

What I've discovered (slowly) over the last several years is that I'm more attuned for longer distances (which Kelly won't race me at), and I'll do one or two races at these longer distances each year (one year I did a Half Ironman Triathlon (1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike ride, and 13.1 mile run). What I needed to admit was 2 things.

1. that 30 lbs heavier for 6 inches taller was too much, and when you swim, bike and run, every pound counts - no matter how much you train

2. that training for distance is completely different than training for short distance speed

I figured these things out during this past fall, (well - i finally admited to them at least) and decided to use the off season to start putting it into practice. I started experimenting with how to lose weight, while not killing off too much of the hard earned muscle that i did need for training. I use the website at www.livestrong.com called 'The Daily Plate' which also has a corresponding iPhone application. Over the next few months, I figured out what settings actually corresponded to how my body actually functions and started losing weight, that didn't seem to adversely affect my running performance. As of March 31, 2009 I've lost 10 pounds, 8 of it the last 2 months.

I started noticing my speed increasing as I lost weight as well. I did two things to improve this. First I started forcing myself to run faster during portions of each run, even if it meant I had to walk towards the end. A friend of mine was a pro triathlete, and he always told me' to run faster, you have to run faster'. So simple it's stupid, but it works, and as I became leaner, this seemed to even increase my speed more. Now when i say more, I mean more for me. I can run a 9 minute mile forever (I can stop running for months and pick up at any time and run 10 miles at a 9 minute mile pace - for some folks that is a big deal. But running an 8 minute mile was a real struggle for me, even for just two miles, much less 3. I ran plenty of 6 minute mile in high school - but nothing in the last 15 years.

Now, in the last 2 months, the increase has been gaining and i went from feeling like I was dying after running a couple 8:30 miles, to running an average pace of 7:40 in the carlsbad 5k (that would be a 23:15 - by far my best time in many years. I've been fluctuating from 191.5 and 193 lbs since the race last weekend and my body is definately processing the big push last weekend, and my metabolism is asking for more food than I'm used to, but i actually find eating more than what is on my schedule and I love more weight. I think it's a next jump in what's going on, and I'm sure I'll be making more adjustments.

My next race is the Newport Triathlon (800m swim, 15 mile bike, 5k run) on April 19th. I have a vision of being 189lbs for the race, and performing even better.

follow up on livestrong 'my daily plate' iphone app

just a short update letting folks know that I had a chance to speak with some of the team members who built the livestrong.com calorie tracker iphone app. They indicated that they are working hard and to watch for some great new features coming soon! I'm participating in their 'dare' to publicly track my food intake for 14 days. I could win an ipod, but that isn't my motivation, it's just lots of fun to have one more way to keep myself honest and accurate in tracking my daily caloric intake, and really test the iphone app to it's limits.

One of the areas i've seen that is lacking (one of the few) is that the 'fitness' portion isn't as nearly polished as the 'food' section is. I hope that is one of the areas that will get updated in the next version. It's really nice in 'food' for it to show me my regular menu items, and this would be huge for the fitness area too (so my regular swim, bike, run and weight training were just sitting there for me to pick).

new favorite iphone app

I'm absolutely obsessed with the www.livestrong.com 'my plate' application. I really like the web features, but it's the iPhone app that just kills me. The iPhone app is so clean and well thought out that I actually prefer the iPhone app over the web forms. I don't think that I've ever chosen to use a mobile app over a full screen web application. The smaller screen size almost always becomes enough of a detriment that the web is a much easier way to go, but it's just not true in this case.

The app is about tracking your calorie intake and tracking your workouts, but with this type off app, you usually get tired of it after just a day or two. The difficulty in putting in every meal you eat, and each individual item is just too painful. It's just not true with this one. It's so easy to enter search information in, and the fact that they've preloaded you with not only food you buy in the grocery store, but also food you eat out at a restaurant. From Old Spaghetti Factory to Hardees (Carls Jr) and Kroger. The extensive database is quick on the 3G network and I'm just so impressed that I can keep track of that level of detail without frustration.

I'm fortunate to have such a great organization like livestrong.com to participate in, as they seem to be extremely commited to their goals, as well as the overall health of everyone, and making it available for everyone to use.

It's a pretty close tie, as to whether I use my facebook, pandora or livestrong iPhone app more each day, but I'm giving them all a run for their money on a hourly basis.

Great job to their web team.

Communication

You would think that with all the options for communication in our very busy 21st century world, that our ability to communicate would be better than ever. I find that with most of the people I work with, that they'd say that communication is worse than it has ever been. The problem seems to come from distraction, not from an intent not to communicate.

I've taken a lot of seminars and courses in communication over the last 20 years, whether it was while I was in the Army, college or corporate time management training, the key item all 3 warn their students about is disruption. Disruption of your thought process, leads to poor communication. They all tell you that you need to set time aside each day for each type of work that you do. This includes strategic/long term thinking, operational work (getting things done that include your day to day job) and communication (phone calls (returning messages) answering emails, twitter, SMS, social media status updates -whatever forms you have). You can see that the list of communications options is really getting a bit crazy - and most of them have great potential to interrupt your other efforts. Let's look at the list one more time - just to make sure we are really taking into account everything you have that is making noise during your day to interrupt your train of thought:

Phone Calls (office phone)

Phone Calls (cell phone)

SMS/Text Messages (cell phone)

Email (notification from your pc/mac)

Email (blackberry/iPhone)

Twitter (tweetdeck, etc)

Instant Messaging

I'm sure there are more options on the number of active communications/disruption devices you have that can interrupt your train of thought - or even the other forms of communications (you are trying to answer emails, and you keep getting IM chats popping up, or your phone keeps beeping that you have another text message).

The result is that you may be sending out requests for information in order to do your job better, but then not responding back to others, because you have so many other devices vying for your attention. The basic principles of time management still apply. You need to create discipline into each device and know exactly how and when you are going to respond to each one. I'm sure many will say 'they are all important things I'm waiting to get status on!!" The problem is that if everything is imprtant, then nothing is important. Important by definition indicates that it stands out from the other items.

These new forms of communication are arriving in front of us much faster than we can adapt, as a society, and the result is that a lot more falls through the cracks of our own personal customer service. It's easy to want to be all things to all people, all the time, but the reality is that success will come from effectively communicating expectations. When can you really get back to something. How often can you really watch the form of cummunication that you expect from that person. You even need to come to an agreement with each communiction goal you have, as to which form of communication will be the preferred method, so that you can determine what percentage of your time neeeds to be devoted to it (time management).

We can't avoid new forms of communication. Our business depends on communicating in the ways that our customers, bosses, and peers are the most effective, and adpting to them as quickly as we can (if our goal is customer service - which we mostly are). Just remember to be honest with yourself, determine how often you can really commit to that form of communication, and make sure to let others know what it is. Don't speak generally, be specific. Transparency is more than just open communication, it's also effective communication.

Does (Network) Size Matter?

Everywhere I go, whether in the real world or online, there are folks out there collecting as many contacts as possible, at any cost. In the real world, I've rarely seen this be a successful tactic, and I don't see it working so far online either. I know of a lot of 'LIONS' on LinkedIn, and folks with many thousands of followers on Twitter, but in most cases, it doesn't seem to make them happy or more successful. I'm not saying that there aren't people with large followings and networks that haven't achieved success, I'm just saying it isn't their social media networks that were the cause of that success, they have other skills that have done that for them.

I know you've seen these folks in real life networking events. They show up at the event, grab a drink at the bar and quickly move to the closest conversation in progress, with 5 of their business cards in hand before they ever say word one. They insert a few words into a conversation, just enough to get attention, others in the conversation are polite, and introduce themselves, and vois la, they have an opening to push cards into the unwary hands of everyone, who now feel obliged to find a card and provide it to the intruder, out of polite response. The members of this conversaton are soon left by the 'networker', and barely notice as they continue their conversation. These folks will all be a bit suprised the next day when they get at least one, if not several online networking invitations to become 'friends', as well as an email, and most likely a voicemail left before business hours.

There was no 'connection' between the networker and the conversations that he repeatedly joined throughout the evening. He didn't really join in their topics of discussion, or contribute to their quest for knowledge or humor (whatever they were looking to discuss). Why does this person now feel that he can reach out and innundate everyone he's met with requests that, if accepted, show a close personal or business relationship with others? This same person will also forward more requests for connections to your network than any of your closest network combined, and you'll get tired of using the 'ignore' button much sooner than you think (should you actually accept their 'friend' and network invitations.

Please people, take a breath, enjoy the work you do, and when you network, join 2, maybe 3 conversations during the evening, that really intrugue you, and really participate. This is true online as well - find groups and discussions that you are passionate about (either pleasure or work related). The people you meet, will see your knowlege/passion on the subject, and over time, will come to rely on you and when they need something you have to offer - they'll think of you first, because you are the right choice. You don't need a network of 10,o000 friends and followers - you just need enough quality relationships to help those who need it, which will provide you with all the sales you'll ever need - really - I promise.

Happy New Year and Where is my next blog entry (all 4 of them)

Ok - so I've been trying to get better about how to capture the ideas I come up with for the blog. A couple triathlon ideas really needed to get out, on how to get back safely from our holiday feasting, and then some issues I see popping up online with Twitter, as folks start falling into the same bad habits they have in 'real-time' networking (grabbing as many cards as possible without having a single meaningful conversation).

Anyway - the draft mode is great. This isn't as easy as it seems, as you have to contend with the opinions of the artist designing the site, the programmer who has to build from the artwork and specifications given, and then the opinions of the customer who is paying you to build the website (and many times the 'owner' is not within the demographic of the final user) all of whom have very differing opinions on how different elements come together.

This isn't more apparent anywhere on the site than in the 'error checking'. It's a very small detail in the big scheme of all the tasks that you have to do in order to design, build and ultimately launch as website; but I think it's THE most critical piece. I truly believe that most of our success in business comes from how we handle mistakes, not in our overall day to day operations. Generally, we are in business each day, because our basic business premise is sound, or at least we are part of an industry that is. I have heard numerous times since I started my first company in early 2001 that most small businesses fail in their first 1 year, and then again at 3, 5 and 7 years (I really should look that up - maybe it's urban legend). What I think gets us through those critical moments in business that determines whether we survive to the next anniversay, is how we handle those adverse moments, and in the web industry (or on a website in general) this is when the website fails. Something goes wrong, the server goes down, your connection to the network fails, or there is just a failure in the programming logic. What your website does at a moment like this determines whether the customers that are on the site or trying to get to the site decide whether you are a flake, or that an honest mistake happened and you deserve the benefit of the doubt. You see this come to the forefront with the really useful message (on a poorly thought out site) or something like "A 404 error hass occurred, please contact the system administrator" or something even worse that is just a bunch of code that means nothing without a PhD in Computer Science from CalTech. This can also come through a poorly thought out piece of creative, as we saw with Motrin recently. The great companies anticipate the fact that things happen and put forethought on how to handle these situations. Pandora is definitely my favorite champion of this well thought out strategy. You can see from the image on the right that even when something goes wrong, they have a well thought out appology for the inconvenience, and throw in a bit of humor. I really appreciate that. It makes me even more loyal than I already am (as long as it doesn't happen too often), and when I talk about it online within my Social Media communities (like twitter) - I immediately get contacted by someone at Pandora that is paying attention and they check in with me to make sure everything is ok.. amazing.

There are definitely some other companies that I'm starting to see this happen with, and it seems to be a strategy, because it's showing up in more than one area, so it's not just one rogue employee who gets it. Twitter themselves do a nice job. Many folks are familiar with the 'fail whale' when something goes down at twitter, and they are very active in responding. The folks at Social media aggregator Ping.fm have had their share of problems, and have backup communications (other than twitter) to try and get the word out when something goes wrong. Traditioanlly I'm not a big fan of the Cable industry, but I'm hearing good things about @comcastcares on Twitter that they are really reaching out and trying to differentiate themselves and find new ways to handle customer service.

Pandora is definitely my high marker, and I judge the others on my experience there, as they've really worked to have a multichannel approach to both the proactive and reactive. I hope more folks from my industry take notice of this trend, and take it to heart as a way to conduct business.

If you are Christmas shopping this weekend

I couldn't have said it better myself - so here is Seth Godin's latest wisdom - I hope people really follow this - it's much more in the spirit of the holiday:

Holiday shopping guide

The decisions you make with your hard-earned money this year will have more impact than ever before. So put your money where your mouth is.

Here are a few ideas to consider:

1. Buy handmade items from people you like.

2. Don't buy gift cards. It's lazy and sort of dumb.

3. Don't buy from big brands or big stores that don't care about you, or that act in ways you don't applaud. There are very smart alternatives in almost every category.

4. When in doubt, buy digital items. Even better, give a donation and make many people happy.

5. Realize that when you're going to buy from Amazon, buying from a lens with a red ribbon on top will earn significant money for charity with no effort on your part.

Hugs are an underrated substitute.

Let the holiday preperations begin

Well, today is definitely the beginning of the Thanksgiving holiday around our house. My wife is having the local MOM's club over for their potluck (I'm not sure I'm completely safe in my home office with all those kids running around), and we're starting to pull out extra tables and chairs for our festivities on Thursday, and for us - our primary day is Friday.

We have our primary day as Friday because my wife has a very large family (7 brothers and sisters) - the youngest who is 20, so many already have spouses and children. They have 'other halves' with families as well, so about 8 years ago, instead of having the headache of negotiating each year as to which side of the family got Thursday, or having to eat two meals in one day, my wife and I started hosting Thanksgiving on Friday. In our town (Riverside, CA) we are fortunate enough to have a large 'Mission' style hotel called the "Mission Inn" which is about 80 years old and is well known for hosting many US Presidents looking to escape to the West Coast during the 20's and 30's. During the holidays, it gets all decked out, and the local Main Street which is adjacent is closed down, and ice rinks are setup, carriages tour you thru the locally decorated neighborhoods; it's quite the spectacle. So, as I was saying, we eat on Friday and then head down to the Mission Inn, which has their official City lighting ceremony around 6pm. The Mayor and Santa Clause turn out, there are caroling groups, the ice rink is open, and there are lots of vendors with cider, hot chocolate, and the entire holiday season really gets an official send off. It's really nice to have the 5 block walk down to the festivities and then to walk around with the kids. The little ones (in the years where there are little ones) really like to meet Santa. The older folks drag us over to the Convention center where there is a Christmas tree decorating contest (yuck) - sometimes I get out of that one, and sometimes not.

The holidays are definitely my favorite time of year. There can be an air of stress and distress, but I try to keep in mind the 'spirit' of the holiday and that it's about family and especially the memories we're making for the kids, and that seems to help me keep it all in perspective. Try to enjoy every moment, you won't regret it.

Happy Holidays everyone.

How to make your client happy - stop lying

A bit of a rant - thanks for being here for me.

I read a great blog post by Seth Godin today called The You Show, and it reminded me of a Mad Men episode, which I think was from the first season, where they coined the old Ad Agency adage about 'the day you land an account is also the first day towards losing the account'. This really does seem to be painfully true in so many client/agency relationships, and it's sad. It's like dating the wrong person, and as so many of us do at least once, even marrying the wrong person. We pretend to be someone we are not to impress them, and are able to hold together that persona for a while, but eventually our true nature comes thru. Not to say this is solely the Agency's fault, as the clients can be more than willing to make us think things about them that aren't true either.

Why is this? We are both in business to make a profit (unless you are a nonprofit and then you are there to serve a cause). Either way, we all complain we don't have enough time in the day to get everything done. We all need more space, more staff and more money. So why do we waste time attracting the wrong people/clients/vendors to ourselves?

I really try not to do this. I've always found that when I'm myself, I may not be relevant to every meeting or every RFP or every person I meet, B UT THAT IS OKAY. After 13 years or so of doing this, I really do know myself well enough that I know when I'm taking a bad meeting, yet, a couple times a year I'll do it and sometimes it can screw me up for months if I really chose a dosey.

Thanks for the reminder Seth! I made one of these this past year and it's still shaking itself out. Hopefully that will keep me honest with myself, my clients and my current and future friends for a couple years, as I always enjoy it when I listen to that 'still small voice' that guides me thru those decisions.

You can get results from Social Network Campaigns

<meta equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; by the name of Molecular. I’ve been following their work since I started my first agency in 2001, and probably even before that. They’ve changed their focus a lot over the years, taking advantage of the tools of the web and becoming so much more than a ‘builder of websites’. One of their User Experience analysts, Evan Gerber wrote a great article for iMediaConnection about the steps that need to be taken if we are going to run successful campaigns on Social Media Networks, and if they are going to measure up to the ROI demands of our clients.

He said that there are 3 primary steps , which really follow the same pattern of any media campaign:

Determine what to measure

Take advantage of existing tools

Track how social networking impacts other channels

He summarized my feelings really well in a way I’d felt like I was having trouble getting thru to business owners or marketing executives who wanted a ‘MySpace’ page that was going to fix all their sales problems. Evan said:

“Social networking is more than just a profile page on Facebook. The power of the consumer's voice can be harnessed in multiple ways, to serve many goals. The information can be incredibly valuable to judge the value of content, track user opinion, and propagate a brand message.

But in order to demonstrate success, the savvy brand marketer will create a thorough metrics campaign to measure the effort. The first key step is to identify what success means, and then understand how it can be tracked successfully.

Take advantage of the tools provided by the networks that are out there, see how the brand is fairing, and what can be done to get involved with the conversation. Try to track how the social networking campaign impacts other channels. Even if the numbers are not rock solid, there can be definite trends.”

Take the time to read the full article. iMedia is always a great resource, and I depend on it a lot to help keep me up to date on new thoughts and strategies.

What else can we do as digital professionals to make sure that the newest tactics are palatable to our clients, or more importantly, to their bosses?

social media slowdowns and crowd approval

I've noticed that as LinkedIn has jumped on the application bandwagon (I like some of the new applications I've played with, and will definitely be checking out more and more of them over time), I have noticed a definite slowdown on their website. Sometimes it's been just a slight slowdown to overall page load times, but it's also been as bad as error messages that pages couldn't' be loaded. I think LinkedIn is really getting some traction and making their mark in the Social Networking world, and there is noting that will kill that faster than poor performance, or even more, crashing. I definitely saw this in the early days of MySpace with the 30 somethings who tried to really get active on it. This is completely anecdotal, but it seems that the Gen Y and younger on MySpace don't really feel they have anywhere else to go, so they just put up with the poor performance of MySpace page load times and timeouts, where the older 20 somethings and 30 somethings became quickly fed up with it and moved on to Facebook and other sites that were also competing for their Social Networking time. I'd say that Facebook has been the biggest benefactor of that.

On the other side of that coin is Twitter. It appears to be an accepted fact that Twitter goes down, and everyone is very aware of their 'borrowing' server space wherever they can get it, to the point where we are all discussing their downtime mascot with the recent change to the Twitterpillar. Why is it okay for Twitter to be down, but no MySpace or for that matter an ecommerce site, or CNN.com for that matter? Are we rooting for this up and comer with out any monetization plan because they seem to be breaking new ground, and that gives them some underdog status that we instinctively pardon? I like the idea that we give the new guy/underdog a break, it might show that our society is somewhat understanding that the guy that is out there trying something new deserves a break now and then. I wouldn't count on this lasting forever, we are a fickle group, and soon, Twitter will become ingrained and no longer the excitinng new kid, and we'll demand our Twitter 24/7 without fail, much like our dialtone. There are already competitors to Twitter, and much like Friendster, early adoption and success can still be lost by a mistep at the wrong moment.

Twitter - The New Banners and Ears

It concerns me a little bit, as I get more involved with Twitter, that I'm noticing a trend. The broadcast Twitterer (my own word). Twitter is supposed to be (like the Internet in it's most basic premise) an interactive experience. I've noticed more and more that many folks broadcast out their information on Twitter, some of it very useful and informative, but still mostly one way. I've even noticed that some folks do get the concept that the micro-blogging idea is an interactive activity and they'll ask questions, but never actually acknowledge if you take the time to answer their quesitons. Now maybe they are so innundated with responses that they can't get back to everyone personally (thru an @keithpape or by DM'ing). If this is the case, then kudos to them, but a generic response to all saying 'hey - thanks for all the incredible responses I got - they are so numerous I can't get back to each one of you individually'. Has Twitter just replaced the banner ad as a new way to get your brand in front of a maximum number of people?

That brings me on to the 'ears' issue. I call it 'ears' because it reminds me of those old vietnam war movies where they always have some nutty soldier lopping off the ears of his enemy as a collection of his conquests. I'm wondering about the thousands of people that some folks follow (and the correlation to the thousands that follow them). Are people just following others so they'll get followed? Is that the etiquite that is being established? Is that okay - or is it false pretense and doesn't really follow the pretense of relevancey that we all talk about so much in search. It seems like search is the reason we do the #xxxx and the overall purpose of blogging and micro-blogging.. right? Relevant information. Are these the shadow server and white font games of early SEO. I'd hope we learned something from those early endeavors.

I don't necesarrily have all the answers, and just because it's a good ideology that we only follow people we are really going to/ or are interested in reading (can you really read the tweets of 1487 people that you follow?) or is it just a branding tool, and the game is played by following everyone, hoping that they will follow you, and you will then have the biggest numbers, and therefore 'win'?

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://keithpape.blogspot.com/2008/11/twitter-new-banners-and-ears.html' title='Twitter - type='text'>

ok - so it's really windy in riverside today (i think most of so cal is that way today), and it really sucks.

There is no way I'm putting my contacts in, and my eyes are liking the glasses so much today. I'm supposed to be training for the LA Marathon (Feb 16, 2009 - www.lamarathon.com ) and as soon as I heard the wind at 6:30 I went back to bed. So now I feel crappy because I didn't run and just don't have time to go out now (samantha is sleeping).

On a good note, the stock market is way up (maybe the physical wind change, and the market are in sync today.. weird, huh?)

I hope the day starts to even out, as I'd love to get that 11 mile run in today. My younger son, Jordan is running it as well (actually I'm running it to do it with him, and he's only 12!).

is really hating the wind (not good for contacts, running, mondays, attitude..) Nicole painted Samantha's little foot in a rainbow of colors and pressed it on a small white tile and wrote 'Daddy & Samantha' on it for me. She made ones for the grandpas as well. It was awesome. The boys got me a cool digital frame that runs off a usb key drive. Nicole is going to load some recent pictures on it for me. Jordan created a personal card for me with a poem on the inside. I couldn't ask for more. I had a disagreement with a company I was working with, over several items, including the contents of my Blog. I'd always thought about the blog and how it seems to be a private journal in so many ways, yet, obviously it's open to the entire Internet.

I enjoyed working with this other company (although no relationship is perfect -they all require sacrifice and compromise), but in the end, they thought it best that we part ways. I have no hard feelings for them, and actually offered my personal assistance during a transition period. What I am glad about is that I know things happen for a reason (at least that is my version or reality) and I take each hiccup as an experience to learn from.

One of my considerations is what to write in my blog.. Did I jeopardize my relationship by writing my thoughts in my blog, or is it simply and indication that we weren't a good match to work together and it is better for us both. I'm not pretending to have the answer, but it certainly reinforces the importance of remembering that his is a public forum, and there are issues that can arise, especially as I usually work in a 'client' environment and there is always potential for sensitive or conflicting information to be out there.

I've spent a lot of time reading other entrepreneurs and executive's blogs to see how they deal with this issue. The most common seems to be to speak in generalities when it comes to customers, or to use open examples (like.. Google made an announcement about support (or lack there of for Rich Media formats today.. (provide link).. that way I'm not discussing one of my clients - or at least not until after the project is 100% public... very interesting quandaries.

The end result is that although my most recent change was unexpected, I know that we will both persevere, and I will find a way to fill what I've lost, and it's my sincerest hopes that we all gained something from the experience and it makes us better people.

On a similar note.. I really enjoy reading Keith Ferrazzi's articles on relationships and networking on inc.com (http://www.inc.com/resources/sales/articles/20050901/ferrazzi.html) - his most recent is on 'Making Business Personal' and along the same lines as the issues I had, he shows that making it personal and ensuring that you have a good fit, you can also involve all of your activates, and even involve your family in your business, and he even feels that mixing clients, with each other, as well as with your friends and family only makes a relationship stronger - as you never know how much more personal that relationship can become and lead to unexpected successes for you as well as the unexpected others you might involve in your dealings. He says that by making all of your relationships personal (instead of having business relationships and personal relationships) that you then ensure that each relationship has the same quality standards, and you treat them all equally (with the benefit of spending more time with your family as they aren't excluded while you work too much! (a little humor here and there.. thanks for staying with me).

I've been accused of being a workaholic in the past - and I hope Mr. Ferrazzi's advice can be something that I implement and improve my own life and relationships with.

Happy New Year everyone.

Keith

Holidays Apporach

It would seem that the holidays are fast approaching. Faster than I can ever be ready. My wife and I are remodeling the kitchen (which means I work day and night - and she does all the remodeling. I pretend to help by occasionally handing her tools. She's very handy that way and completely unwilling to wait for me to have 'spare' time. It looks really good. My friend Jeff has a construction company and comes over occasionaly to help out.

My article on iMedia has been postponed until November 30th. I'm just glad that it is getting published.

Training was going well, but I started having knee problems last week, just prior to the Mission Inn run (10k) and I ended up working with Nicole on the kitchen instead. Good time to spend with her -but I do miss racing. The SoCal Half Marathon is in like 3 weeks - not sure if I'll be ready. I enjoyed it last year - bit I'm just not sure.

Publish or Perish

I was recently asked to write a short article for an online magazine. I was very excited, as this was a goal I had, since I started as an online professional nearly 10 years ago. I thought I did a good job of remaining calm when the editor asked, I asked what I felt were some relevant questions that I had heard other writers ask in the past (what type of topic are you interested in, when do you need it by, how long should it be..) I was very proud of myself.

So off I went back to my normal work day, with a basic idea in hand and a plan to start a basic outline, as I had learned in college, and I figured I'd be off and running in a day or two, as I fit it into my already busy schedule or sales calls, meetings and project management (not including family time, training, sleep..). I had just over a month to get it done, plenty of time. You wouldn't believe how quickly those first couple weeks go, and of course, I hadn't really accomplished anything. One of my key programmers was off on his honeymoon, and that added some stress, then a project got behind, then my business partner went off on his honeymoon, wow, what a month.

So, as the deadline approaches, I keep opening the article I had started, and everything I had a thought, even in the shower - I would jump out right after the thought - no matter where I was and at least shorthand the information/idea onto the doc I had opened for this article. I was now getting desperate to get something down on paper (virtual paper.. But paper none the less). I felt as if I only could get a couple thoughts together and some quiet time, the ideas that I knew were in there would start flow and I'd be okay again. The deadline of course, came and went. I emailed the editor immediately, I did have some professional dignity left, informed her that I was in fact behind and would complete the article over the weekend, and then have it reviewed by some friends and business associates on Monday and have it to her on Tuesday.

Believe it or not, that was the final straw, now I was embarrassed for having missed a deadline, something I preach heavily to my own employees and yet here I was.. Late. I finished very early Monday morning, had my business partner review the article, accepted his changes and sent it f off to the editor with my sincerest apologies and a lot of apprehension that the article was complete crap.

It's now been nearly a week since I sent the article off, and I've yet to hear anything back. I'll be unwilling the editor today to get an update, but I have to admit that I'm concerned that I didn't follow my rule of 'under promise and over deliver'. I've certainly learned that I need to follow my own rules and if I commit to a side project, it still has the same weight as any business commitment. I truly did enjoy irritating the article, once I got to it, and know that only thru practice and professionalism, will I get the opportunity to do it more (other than this blog - which is completely up to me). Whatever the outcome, I think I've learned a lesson about side projects, and how important writhing is to me. I'll be adjusting how I do a few things, and either way, I've learned a few lessons. It's funny. I was just thinking that my dad, who has written articles for decades and has a few books published, still has this same problem, and warns me against it all the time. Shows you that sometimes you can't tell someone - they have to learn the hard way. Darn kids.. never listen.

Lessons Learned

So, being new the blogsphere - I've learned an important lesson this week. Don't ever delete work that you've done - or others have done to you, no matter how trivial, as everyone takes their work very seriously.

I'm not saying that you shouldn't take pride in your work, but I mean SERIOUSLY, don't delete comments others make - almost no matter what.
Its been very busy the last week. I'm working on 3 projects for various clients and companies, my family is busy with preparing for the first holiday of the 'holiday season' - our annual halloween party - and you can feel the holiday stress building already. Not to mention that I have about 5 more projects (just work related) built up already. I've also been asked to write my first article for a publication, iMedia (www.imedia.com). I'm a big technology geek, and although I'm not a programmer by trade, I pride myelef on being a technologist and becoming an expert in 'how' a technolgy works and how it's used in business. So - I'll be writing about one of my favorite subjects - Flash Video - I have some frustrations - as I'm not all that happy with how it gets used, and some misconceptions that I think might be holding it back some. (anyway - I'll update more on that as I get it written).

Our Halloween party is always fun - it usually goes until about 3am (sometimes 5am) and usually has some combination of karaoke, DJ's, jello shots, scary monsters, etc to keep all types entertained for the evening. The key - we found out - is to always invite all neighbors - even if you know they won't come - because if you invite them - they seem less likely to call the police at midnight to shut you down - I guess they feel that they are invited, and although not there - that there is some legitamacy to the whole thing.

I worked all weekend - and I'll be needing to make that up to my wife and kids very soon, as I hardly saw them at all - sleep deprevation was definitely setting in between Friday - Sunday (Thanks to Todd (www.cybersmack.com) for doing so much more than I did - he's the real hero). He's been my go-to guy for a couple years now and I wouldn't be a smarter business owner without his help.

That's it for now - I'm still not sure what to do about my cancelled triathlon - I may do Catalina in Novemenber - it's just a sprint -but it's supposed to be very tough.. although I may just train for the SoCal Half Marathon and call it a season.

End of Season Bummer

Well, I just got back from my business trip to Las Vegas ( I was at the ICCM show on Monday and Tuesday) to find out that my half ironman triathlon (The Big Rock) has been cancelled for this year!

It appears that there is an issue with Lake Perris, where they are having to release water, and swimming will be unavailable (no swimming - no need for a Triathlon)

I'm looking for a replacement, as I really wanted to do a half ironman type distance race for the end of the season..

Bummer.

Getting Started

Ok - so this is my first post. I thought I would start with my day. I've got a little bit less than 7 weeks until the Big Rock Triathlon (http://www.sawsportsproductions.com/bigrock.html) - so I thought i might get my act together. I rode with Anthony's cyclery today, and we went from Canyon Crest up around Lake Mathews. The group pomised to keep an eye on me, as they get spread out (as there are MANY hills) - well ofcourse I got seperated (lost) - I kind of knew my way around, and made my way to the 215 and back over to canyon crest. I might not have done their route - but I did finish 43 miles on the bike today - overall a successful ride.
The Big Rock Triathlon (November 12th) consists of a 1 mile swim, 52 mile bike and an 8 mile run. (sounds great.. huh!)

I'm heading to Vegas for a tradeshow tomorrow and Tuesday- we'll see how I do keeping up on the training.

Web work is going well, with search business really picking up, along with general web business.
